- ➤ Funeral events for volunteer firefighter Andrew Cross—killed in a wood-shavings explosion at Robbins Lumber in Searsmont—will begin with a public visitation Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m. at Riposta Funeral Home in Belfast and continue with a memorial service Friday, 1 p.m. at Veracity Chapel in Morrill. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Robbins Lumber said it will not lay off workers at its 40-acre Searsmont mill after a fire and explosion last Friday killed a firefighter and injured more than a dozen — employees are receiving pay while production is expected to resume soon as state and federal agencies investigate the incident. - ➤ Hollywood Casino Bangor will host the inaugural Maine Science Awards (featuring a lifetime achievement category) this fall while the Maine Discovery Museum produces the ceremony at the casino; a call for entries starts June 1 and the awards will be given on Oct. 15. WABI 5
- ➤ Maine's public universities will begin a $1.39 million contract with ChatGPT Edu on July 1 to offer a secure AI tool for 25,200 students and 5,600 staff (the plan follows a competitive bidding process and includes optional training with no added fees). Bangor Daily News

- ➤ Governor Janet Mills will order all United States and State flags to be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Thursday to honor Gerald Talbot and Maine Game Warden Joshua Tibbetts, with Talbot honored at Merrill Auditorium in Portland at 10:00 a.m. and Tibbetts’ funeral set for 1:00 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
