- ➤ On Monday, Sophia Cameron—a UMaine master’s graduate and Bangor public works intern—presented a proactive plan to the Infrastructure Committee to guard against emerald ash borer infestations; her strategy calls for spring injections of insecticide in 250 city-owned ash trees and removal of 430 hazardous trees to protect Bangor’s 20% ash canopy. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson announced his run for governor next year—saying he will support working families and protect the environment—at a campaign kick-off at Kittery Town Wharf. Jackson, a fifth-generation logger who first served in the Maine House as an independent in 2002 and later led the Senate until last year, will also visit Auburn and Waterville before the primary begins in June. - ➤ Starting in June, the Maine Department of Health and Human Services will load $120 onto EBT cards for each eligible child to reduce summer hunger, with over 110,000 children expected to benefit and free meal sites opening statewide—families already in SNAP, MaineCare, or free and reduced-price school meals will qualify automatically.
