- ➤ Monday, Hammond Lumber donated $100,000 to the Maine Strong Memorial Foundation to help Searsmont families & workers impacted by the Robbins Lumber explosion. The donation will provide direct financial support and resources for those in need. WABI 5
- ➤ A Brewer teen now receives recognition for his community service efforts after organizing donations for the Boys and Girls Club and local food pantries. - ➤ Robbins Lumber said that two owners, Jim and Alden Robbins, and family member Lily Robbins are treated at Massachusetts General Hospital after a fire and explosion last Friday. The company plans to rebuild and asked that donations go to local fire departments & Shriners for affected first responders and families. FOX Bangor
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Today, Bangor School Department held listening sessions at two local schools to discuss plans for relocating Fairmount students after asbestos was discovered. The department sought input from parents, while a proposal is expected on May 28. WABI 5
- ➤ UMaine System trustees approved a 4% tuition hike Monday morning at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, which will add (about $1,000) in costs for in-state and Canadian undergraduates starting this fall. The increase is part of a $717.7 million budget plan that also allocates $90.1 million for need-based aid. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Teacher Marcy Soucy was named Penobscot County Teacher of the Year on Friday, May 15, in recognition of her work supporting Fairmount School students through programs like the student-run Soar Store & Care Closet. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ In April, Maine schools kept international visa students at 3,356 even as the University of Maine System saw a 13% jump from the previous academic year, adding $87 million to the economy & countering a 4% national drop. Bangor Daily News

- ➤ Penobscot County's HIV outbreak increased to 43 cases after two new cases were diagnosed in April, and Maine CDC said nearly all patients had a history of drug use or homelessness — officials continue testing and prevention efforts amid concerns that actual numbers may be higher. - ➤ Bangor women living with ulcerative colitis, Lyla Lazear and Olivia Mamula, are organizing the annual Take Steps Walk to benefit the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation New England Chapter at Husson University. The event will feature games and a silent auction on Sunday, May 31. WABI 5
