  • Sisters Malia and Ella Johnson from Hermon are raising $2600 in 20 days to join the Harvey Gamage expedition celebrating America’s 250th birthday — their trip from Portland to New York City will let them view the Statue of Liberty and earn boat certification.  WABI 5
  • The Soul Friends Pet Expo held yesterday outside Furniture Gallery brought together 12 animal rescue groups (including Blessed Be the Bullies) that offered food trucks, pet photography, and grooming booths for community adoptions. Volunteers urged fostering as over 50 dogs became available for new homes.  WABI 5
  • The VFW in Belfast repurposed its raffle fundraiser aimed at buying a new furnace to instead support first responders from the Searsmont tragedy. Tickets (offering prizes like a grill, cooler, and camping gear) sold outside the Belfast Community Co-op will be drawn after the Memorial Day parade on May 25.  WABI 5
  • Pittsfield EMT Bryan Clement launched a GoFundMe for Searsmont lumber mill explosion victims and their families today — community donations range from $20 to $1,000 with nearly $25,000 raised so far — to cover immediate expenses.  WGAN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Sunday morning, a fire at 508 South Main Street in Brewer displaced several residents and badly damaged a three-unit building — all escaped safely as crews from nearby communities worked quickly to extinguish heavy flames.  FOX Bangor

  • Maine foragers enjoy an abundant spring mushroom season — Magan Mishio found wild black morel mushrooms last week in local woods, and experts say warmer soil and steady rain will yield additional species while climate change may alter future harvests.  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMaine baseball swept Albany at Mahaney Diamond this weekend but missed earning a first round bye after UMBC finished with NJIT's win. They will face Albany again Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Binghamton Bearcats Sports Complex.  Bangor Daily News
  • Colby College’s softball team won its first regional title on Saturday at Husson University’s Robert and Frances O’Keefe Field in Bangor with wins over MIT and Endicott — the team reached a 30-12 record and will face Rowan University in a best-of-three Super Regional on May 21-22.  Bangor Daily News
  • Whitworth’s Pirates hit 17 hits — outclassing Husson University 15-10 on Saturday in New Jersey, eliminating Husson from the Montclair State NCAA Division III Regional. The win sent them into a championship game against Endicott on Sunday.  Bangor Daily News
