CRIME NEWS

  • The parents of an adult, nonverbal man with severe disabilities filed a lawsuit in Penobscot County Superior Court accusing Lee Residential Care of actively concealing repeated physical, sexual and emotional abuse by staff between 2015 and January 2022—leaving their son at risk.  Bangor Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maine lawmakers have not shown willingness to extend free community college tuition, which is set to end later this year, while system President David Daigler said the program has helped 17,000 students and increased enrollment by 19% since 2022—filling key workforce needs.  WGAN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers are considering a bill that would stop private equity and real estate investment trusts from owning more Maine hospitals until June 2029—Sen. Michael Tipping said the move is needed to protect patients and hospital services. Health experts and groups like the Maine Nurses Association support the moratorium, which would allow time to put safeguards in place while exempting current hospital sales filed before June 1.  News Center Maine
  • The Bangor City Council named Carollynn Lear as the new city manager. Lear—an attorney with experience in state and federal government including the IRS—will replace retiring Debbie Laurie and begin her role on June 16.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Bangor Regional YMCA is promoting water safety this May as part of National Water Safety Month after CDC data shows drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages one to four. Aquatics Director Shawn Rich says parents and caregivers can now enroll their kids in swim lessons to help them become more comfortable and safe in the water.  FOX Bangor

SPORTS NEWS

  • Steve Pound, a 5-foot-9 basketball star and coach who led his teams to both state and national championships and was inducted into the inaugural Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014, passed away on May 2 after a long illness—leaving a legacy of scoring, mentoring, and dedication in local and Canadian basketball circles.  The Piscataquis Observer
