COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NEWS CENTER Maine and Good Shepherd Food Bank have teamed up for the Feed Maine Telethon, which will kick off on Thursday, May 14 to raise funds and awareness for hunger relief in the community. Donations between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. will be matched by Hannaford to help families in need.  News Center Maine
  • All Souls Congregational Church will demolish and rebuild its Arlan A. Ballie building on Broadway under a $3.25 million plan starting this month. The two-story structure will house offices, Sunday school and gathering spaces that boost accessibility and energy efficiency, with construction set after June and finishing in 12 months.  WABI 5
  • Nine area credit unions are hosting a 5K Color Run Sunday, May 16 in Brewer to benefit Children’s Miracle Network. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m. at the Bangor Federal Credit Union on Dirigo Drive.  WABI 5
  • Gerald Talbot, Maine’s first Black legislator and civil rights pioneer, died over the weekend at 94; friends recalled his steadfast work for equality (his daughter and other family members continue his legacy in local government).  News Center Maine

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country star Brad Paisley will perform with special guest Jake Worthington at the Maine Savings Amphitheater on Aug. 29 as part of the Hollywood Casino Concert Series at the Bangor waterfront; tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m.  Bangor Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine received $10 million in federal funds to continue pesticide treatments against spruce budworm in northern forests — treatments available only on land where owners opt in. The funds will help protect jobs and forest revenue by limiting pest damage across millions of acres.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety is urging drivers statewide to buckle up as the Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 11 to 31, following a recent drop in seatbelt use (currently at 92.2%).  FOX Bangor
  • Hunters have until Monday, May 18 at midnight to register online for the Moose Lottery, with the drawing set for Saturday, June 20 at the Acton Fairgrounds. Applicants must be at least 10 years old by the season start.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Husson University's softball (15-game streak) and baseball (13 wins) teams face Endicott College in NCAA Division III openers later this week. The softball team hosts a four-team tournament at the O’Keefe Field in Bangor Thursday at 11 a.m. while the baseball team plays in New Jersey Friday.  Bangor Daily News
