EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Maine held its 224th undergraduate commencement as thousands received their degrees today on campus in Orono. Graduates celebrated becoming lifelong Black Bears and reflected on their years of growth and strong community bonds.  FOX Bangor
  • Maine Maritime Academy’s training ship STATE OF MAINE passed the Patriot State (from Massachusetts Maritime Academy) near the Cape Cod Canal on Sunday as cheering families watched cadets exchange whistle signals. The vessel began its summer sea term last Saturday when it departed from Portland Harbor and is bound for Galveston.  FOX Bangor

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Maine lawmaker Gerald Talbot, who served from 1972 to 1978 and helped revive the NAACP in the state + advanced civil rights through key anti-discrimination efforts, died at 94.  WABI 5

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • State officials announced that free fishing is available Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 for anglers 16 and older statewide – with 50 Special Opportunity Waters reserved for young anglers.  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Husson’s Ana Lang pitched a five-inning no-hitter as the Eagles beat Thomas College 36-4 at O’Keefe Softball Field in Bangor Saturday, earning their 8th straight North Atlantic Conference title. Husson will advance to the NCAA Tournament and learn their site Monday.  Bangor Daily News
  • In Penobscot — usually for human sports — a unique toss and fetch team is shaking up local dog activities. Donna Boidi, a new resident and professional trainer who launched the team last year, said handlers and their dogs compete in 60-second rounds for extra points for clean aerial catches.  News Center Maine
  • Husson's baseball team won its seventh straight conference title on Saturday at the Winkin Sports Complex — the 4-3 win over Thomas College secures its spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament as it awaits placement details on Monday.  Bangor Daily News
