Good morning, Bangor. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 9th of May.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The deadline for the 2025 moose permit lottery is seven days away as applicants will file online on Maine Fish and Wildlife website until 11:59 pm on May 15th. Applicants must indicate wildlife management districts (their permit choices) and select a preferred hunting season (including an antlerless option) when they apply.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • MaineHealth is studying why some early Lyme patients do not fully recover after treatment as warming winters allow ticks to spread in nearly all counties, which raises the risk for diseases like Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis + Powassan virus. Researchers are recruiting patients now and will set traps this summer to collect ticks from small animals and better understand the factors behind poor recovery.  News Center Maine
  • Today, nurses and community members in Bar Harbor gathered to protest the planned closing of Mount Desert Island Hospital’s OB department on July 1. They warned that the change will force local women to travel farther for prenatal care — over 1,000 petition signatures back their concerns.  WABI 5
  • Together Place, a Bangor recovery nonprofit, lost state funding for its Peer Run Recovery Center for the first time since 2016—losing about $300,000—and plans to apply for opioid settlement funds, new grants and community donations while appealing the state decision. The organization, which serves 300 to 500 people monthly, said it will maintain its programming and staff despite the setback.  Bangor Daily News
  • Northern Light Health is joining the national effort for Mental Health Awareness Month by sharing resources and support to help people care for their mental wellness. The group will host several events—Acadia HOPE Day on May 18 at Cascade Park and free talks on healthy brain aging on May 17—to offer community outreach and guidance.  The Piscataquis Observer
