Good morning, Bangor. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 7th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Bangor girl scout, Elizabeth Smith, earned the Pinnacle Award and Future Leaders Scholarship for her work in the community—she organized a pet supply drive for the Humane Society, helped the homeless with hygiene bags, and provided students with clean clothing while planning to study nursing and psychology at Simmons University.  WABI 5
  • Camden Jewell, 17, almost lost his fishing rods when a big lake trout yanked one off the dock at Little Red Camp on Moosehead Lake during Easter weekend—he managed to reel in the 22-inch fish with his dad and brother, and his family later filleted it for their dinner while planning more fishing trips for his birthday.  The Piscataquis Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Andrew Peters of Vertical Bay applied for a 40-acre, 20-year lease to expand his scallop farm—an effort that could make it the largest in Maine—and boost production for long-term sustainability.  Maine Public

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 50 environmental advocates and Penobscot Nation citizens gathered on the banks of the Penobscot River in Old Town on May 4th to protest a planned expansion of the Juniper Ridge landfill by Casella Waste Management—which seeks to extend its contract and increase capacity amid concerns over out-of-state waste and pollution. Pending legislative bills and further testing of landfill leachate may affect future decisions on operations.  Maine Public

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine's secretary of state's office announced the final wording for a voter ID bill that would require photo ID for in-person and absentee voting—if approved, the measure will change the current system which only requires ID at registration. The proposal from the Dinner Table went through a 30-day public comment period and will be on the November ballot—effective Jan. 1.  News Center Maine
  • After water tests returned clean and inspections were passed, the Bangor Water District began using its new nearly 110-foot-tall water tank near the corner of Cleveland Street and Venture Way on Tuesday. The tank holds 3.3 million gallons—more than twice the capacity of the Thomas Hill Standpipe—and will eventually replace two aging water tanks as crews apply a sealant to weatherproof its exterior.  Bangor Daily News
  • At a public hearing on Monday, May 5th, the Maine DEP urged lawmakers to postpone a climate superfund bill that would force fossil fuel companies to pay for damages from extreme weather — DEP Commissioner Melanie Loyzim said officials want to wait until next year to review how similar laws perform in Vermont and New York. Supporters argue the measure is needed to make polluters accountable while opponents worry it will unfairly burden taxpayers.  Maine Public
  • Maine lawmakers considered bills (LD 104 and LD 1847) that would require testing medical cannabis for mold, pesticides and heavy metals, making Maine the only state among over 30 without such checks. Some small growers and caregivers warn the new rules could add costly measures (raising concerns about business strain) while public health officials support the move to improve patient safety.  Maine Public
