Good morning, Bangor. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 5th of May.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA released a plan on April 28 to limit forever chemicals by setting guidelines for liquid waste discharge and advancing research, but it did not include timelines or budgets. Maine scientists + environmental experts say the actions may not reduce PFAS levels in drinking water and fear that pending litigation could lead to weaker standards.  Bangor Daily News
  • Organizers from Penobscot Nation and local community groups in Old Town gathered for a water ceremony and rally against the planned landfill expansion — warning that the project could pollute the Penobscot River. The speakers called on officials to find long-term waste solutions — noting that much of the waste is from out-of-state sources.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Maine Department of Transportation began improvements on a 22-mile stretch of southbound I-95 between Fairfield and Augusta on May 4—crews will pave, update guardrails, and improve drainage while working from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. The project is set to finish in the fall and drivers should expect lane closures.  FOX Bangor
  • Former Governor Paul LePage has filed to run for Congress in Maine’s 2nd District for the 2026 race—he will speak tomorrow, according to strategist Brent Littlefield. He lost his governorship to Janet Mills in 2022, and Representative Jared Golden currently holds the seat after defeating Austin Theriault by about 3,000 votes in 2024.  WABI 5
  • Former Gov. Paul LePage filed to run for Maine's 2nd Congressional District late Sunday and will announce his run today, setting up a contest with U.S. Rep. Jared Golden in one of the most competitive races. He spent most of his time in Florida after leaving office—raising questions about his residency and record as he enters the race.  Bangor Daily News
  • Lawmakers in Augusta debated bills that redefine child neglect so families in poverty are not unfairly investigated, and the proposals would limit removals and require more support for struggling parents—moves based on data showing Maine removed children more often than most states. The discussions come after federal research revealed that neglect claims cause most removals in Maine despite many cases being linked to poverty.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • State records show that only 43 Bangor eateries have been inspected this year as of May 2, while many restaurants have gone more than two years without a check. The city turned over its own inspection duties years ago—leaving businesses to rely on a shared state inspector for timely health checks.  Bangor Daily News
