- ➤ Bangor firefighters and community members gathered to honor Lt. Billy VanPeursem, a dedicated lieutenant who served since 1989 and took his own life after nearly 40 years of service + fundraisers are underway to support his family while drawing attention to mental health support for first responders. - ➤ A rare apple tree called Drap d’Or de Bretagna was found on a Verona Island farm and is believed to have been brought to Maine by early French settlers in the late 1600s—offering new genetic clues about our state's orchard history. A cutting from the tree will be grafted onto new stock this spring—paving the way for future fruit-bearing trees to be shared with local growers. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ A new mural was unveiled Saturday at the Kenduskeag River Pump Station that shows local fish, plants and animals. University of Maine students from Intermedia and the Department of Ecology, Fisheries and Wildlife joined with Bangor Beautiful to create the Penobscot River Ecology Mural—an effort that began as a doctoral project—meant to highlight vital river species. - ➤ Federal funding of $50 million was secured for a new aircraft hangar in Bangor as part of the FY2025 continuing resolution, announced Friday by Senator Susan Collins’ office. The new facility will boost the Maine Air National Guard’s readiness for its KC-135 refuelers and future tankers + support the 101st Air Refueling Wing. WABI 5
