- ➤ Acadian Seaplants, a Canada-based seaweed company, closed its Maine operations in Jonesboro in April because high exchange rates + tariffs raised transportation costs. The shutdown affected six employees and 30 contractors and ended a key part of the rockweed harvest that supported local jobs and industry. Bangor Daily News

- ➤ Maine State Police arrested 65-year-old Raymond Brown at a Bangor traffic stop on Broadway at around 4:15 p.m. Thursday—41 years after 18-year-old Linda Maxwell was last seen in Calais and her body was recovered two days later from the St. Croix River near Robbinston. News Center Maine
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ 114 years ago, a fierce fire started in a hay shed and quickly spread in downtown Bangor, destroying nearly 100 businesses, 260 homes, and many landmarks — leading to the creation of a central park where the post office and Norumbega Hall once stood. The city rebuilt with stronger brick and steel buildings and now preserves the memory of the fire at the Hose 5 museum. News Center Maine

- ➤ Maine state officials led by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows asked federal authorities to phase in the Real ID rule by issuing warnings to travelers instead of disrupting travel starting May 7th—while TSA officials said they plan to enforce the rule as scheduled. WGAN
- ➤ Today, the city of Bangor will begin paving Washington Street from Broad to Oak—drivers will face detours and delays as the westbound lane is closed periodically from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bangor Daily News

- ➤ A new 50-unit senior housing project will start construction next month on a vacant lot between Sunset and Texas avenues, with 44 one-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom units for low-income seniors managed by the Bangor Housing Authority — the building will feature on-site laundry, a rooftop solar array, and wheelchair-accessible units, and residents are expected to move in around the Fourth of July.
