COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three Rivers Kiwanis presents the 20th annual Sebec River Canoe and Kayak Race on Saturday, May 9. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Sebec Reading Room (665 Moulton Hill Road) and the race finishes at Milo’s Veterans Park; fees of $20 for adults and $15 for youth support local programs.  The Piscataquis Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Four local families took over Hermon Mountain this week and plan to keep its family-friendly tradition while adding food offerings, disc golf and a potential comedy show this summer. They also plan to eventually offer lodging and expand seasonal activities for visitors.  WABI 5

  • The Cole Transportation Museum in Bangor will open its season today + welcoming local visitors to enjoy seasonal displays.  WABI 5

FINANCE NEWS

  • County Federal Credit Union will begin a new branch at 96 State St. in Bangor as construction starts in June with an opening planned by May next year — replacing its smaller Main Street branch with enhanced features like two drive-thru lanes and a drive-up ATM.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • 41-year-old progressive oyster farmer Graham Platner (a newcomer from Sullivan) is leading polls as he challenges Senator Susan Collins in November after Gov. Janet Mills withdrew from the race. Platner has promised to shake up state politics while distancing himself from past controversial statements.  Bangor Daily News

  • Turkey hunters in Maine can prepare for the season starting Monday by visiting a local outdoor store to buy Sawyer's permethrin repellent (to ward off ticks) and planning to use every part of the bird in meal recipes.  Bangor Daily News
  • The new guide Dog Hiking New England, co-authored by Jill McMahon & Kristen Valenti, highlights 45 dog friendly trails in New England with distances between three and six miles near towns. It explains hikers can enjoy the scenic routes even without a dog.  News Center Maine

  • UMaine's Black Bears are the fifth seed for next week's America East softball tournament in Orono. The double-elimination tournament starts Wednesday at the Pierre and Catherine Labat Softball Complex — a new five-team format that rewards the regular season champion.  Bangor Daily News
