BUSINESS NEWS

  • Urban Pizza at 329 Main St. closed at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday due to a new liquor license law that forced its owner group to shift licenses to other locations — the group will open a new spot in Bar Harbor.  Bangor Daily News
  • Salt North Tap Room was ordered to pay $135,081+ interest fees to its former head chef, Johnathan Williams, after owner Dane Morgan did not appear in court. Morgan filed a motion to set aside the ruling, and former employees said the restaurant often delayed pay while it continues to operate.  Bangor Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Locally known Panstorm will host the 33rd annual New England Steel Drum Festival at the Bangor Waterfront this weekend. The free, Caribbean-inspired event features a street dance on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. & additional steel drum performances on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  WABI 5
  • The Cole Land Transportation Museum opens its season tomorrow, May 1, with family events including donation-only Night at the Museum (4 to 7 p.m.) on May 12 and a transportation festival and car show returning in September; the museum will welcome visitors until Nov. 11.  WABI 5
  • David Leeman replaced mortar at Fort Knox, a coastal fort built 157 years ago, as Friends of Fort Knox funds yearly repairs with donations and fees to keep the site safe — the fort drawing over 100,000 seasonal visitors will soon pursue projects to repair its steep rock wall, wharves and brick furnaces.  Bangor Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fairmount School will be temporarily closed next school year after undisturbed asbestos was found in its ceiling while crews prepared for roof repairs. The district said classes will safely continue at the 13th Street building this year (public listening sessions on the relocation plan will be held May 18).  WABI 5
  • Adalea Gudroe from Dexter Regional High School was chosen for the Keller BLOOM Program at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay (among only 16 statewide) to explore marine science with hands-on research and mentorship.  The Piscataquis Observer

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A black bear has been seen on Indian Island as spring arrives and residents are urged to secure trash, compost piles and bird feeders to help it move on. The Penobscot Nation Department of Natural Resources said it will not capture the bear since it may return.  Bangor Daily News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Maine-based real estate company, Kittyhawk Properties (owned by Peter and Lisa Caron), bought the seven-story building at 1 Merchants Plaza for $13 million last week in downtown Bangor. The building, home to the Bangor Daily News and engineering firm Haley Ward, will see cosmetic improvements while keeping its tenants.  Bangor Daily News

  • UMaine’s athletics program will benefit from a $10 million gift from longtime donor Phillip Morse, who will use the funds for facility maintenance and new recruitment initiatives + broader sports programs.  Bangor Daily News
  • Former UMaine goalie Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins is one of three Vezina Trophy finalists for best NHL goalie. He posted 31 wins, a 2.71 goals against average, and a .908 save percentage over 54 games, boosting his bid for further awards & recognition.  Bangor Daily News
