BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local business owner Jess Stuart moved her businesses to a new location at 575 Main Street — adding nine private parking spots and a brighter storefront, and she plans to host the annual Not Your Grandmas Flea Market. The event will run this Saturday, May 3rd, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 586 Main Street — gathering over 50 vendors from New England in a space that shifts indoors if weather fails.  WABI 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 25 UMaine students and faculty cleaned up the World War II Memorial outside Memorial Union today as part of Spirit Week+ they mulched debris, planted flowers, and cleared the site to honor those who served.  WABI 5
  • A groundbreaking ceremony took place today in Bangor for the Bright Beginnings Child Development Center on Hillside Avenue near Broadway Shopping Center, which will include 16 classrooms and add 40 new childcare slots. The center will be completed by spring — community partners plan a buy-a-brick campaign to help close a $150,000 funding gap.  WABI 5

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new book titled 'Poisoning the Well: How Forever Chemicals Contaminated America' details Mainers’ struggles with PFAS contamination and explains how Maine has pushed strict laws to limit toxic chemicals in drinking water and farmland—farmer Fred Stone shares his painful experience after high PFAS levels harmed his century-old dairy farm. The book also explains that these chemicals linger in the body and environment for decades, leaving lasting damage.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Maine House passed a bill on Tuesday that limits the governor’s choices for filling a Senate vacancy—requiring the replacement to be from the same party as the departing senator. The measure now goes to the Senate for further votes and may affect future appointments as lawmakers consider the ages of current senators.  Bangor Daily News
  • The Maine Public Utilities Commission said Maine’s 207 area code will last until early 2045. Commission staff returned unused numbers to the pool—delaying the need for a second area code.  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bank of America will offer free one-year memberships through its Golf with Us program so Maine kids aged 6-18 can play golf for $5 or less until May 24 or until 75,000 sign-ups are reached nationwide—Maine Golf said nearly 3,400 children from 27 courses, including several in Bangor, have joined the effort. Courses set their own tee time restrictions to support the growth of young golfers in the state.  Bangor Daily News
  • Nearly 30 Maine golf courses now join the Youth on Course program, which lets kids aged 6-18 play for $5 or less once they join; Maine Golf says enrollment has grown to about 3,400 youth — they plan to add more courses to cover every county.  Bangor Daily News
