COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Navy-led ceremony at Fort Williams near Portland Head Light honored the 49 USS Eagle sailors who died when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship in 1945. Five Purple Hearts were presented to family members and representatives (marking a third annual commemoration) as the community remembered the sacrifice.  News Center Maine
  • Acadia Council will host its Affordable Housing 5K on May 2 in Lamoine to promote affordable living. Community members and runners are encouraged to join the event to support the cause.  WABI 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Isabelle St. Cyr of Monson, who made history as the first trans woman in Miss Maine last year, returns to the pageant this year (continuing her trailblazing legacy) driven by her love for pageantry and her wish to affirm every Maine woman's voice.  The Piscataquis Observer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Maine Tourism Association report released at the annual conference at the Samoset Resort in Rockport showed that 2025 had 4.4% fewer visitors even though spending increased, pushing tourism impact above $16 billion — business leaders remain cautiously optimistic despite rising operating costs and global uncertainty.  News Center Maine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMaine Army, Navy ROTC and Veteran Services joined efforts outside Memorial Union today to clean, weed and replant the Class of 1945 Memorial for Maine Day Week, honoring about 4,000 UMaine students and alumni while preserving a vital local landmark.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new state law takes effect in July and will let homeowners and renters install affordable plug-in solar devices to cut electric bills. The systems must meet UL3700 standards & will be available by fall pending updated safety codes, according to the Maine Office of the Public Advocate.  The Piscataquis Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Mad Kat’s Restaurant in Brewer, staff saved a customer’s life Sunday after he collapsed during brunch. Seventeen-year-old server Abigail Sprague performed six minutes of CPR until EMTs arrived + her swift actions helped stabilize him.  WABI 5
  • In April, the American Red Cross reminds Bangor pet owners to be ready for warmer weather hazards by keeping a pet first aid kit with essentials + knowing where to find emergency clinics.  WABI 5
