COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Bangor Partnership returns with Adopt-a-Garden, offering residents a chance to plant flowers (starting with a Big Dig Day on May 16) and inviting volunteers for a downtown clean-up on April 25.  WABI 5
  • Penquis received a $250,000 Housing for Everyone grant from the TD Charitable Foundation to support eviction prevention services for about 155 eligible individuals & deliver rental counseling, tenant education and financial assistance to strengthen local housing stability.  The Piscataquis Observer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Penobscot Island Air resumed mail delivery Wednesday after suspending service Tuesday due to a nearly $390,000 payment dispute with the Postal Service for mail deliveries dating back to 2023. The Postal Service promised to pay 25% of the balance by Friday while Maine’s congressional delegation worked to resolve the issue.  Maine Public

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor hosts a busy April vacation lineup with a live reptile show on Thursday, a dry ice demonstration on Friday, and spaghetti bridge engineering on Saturday as part of Earth Day celebrations. Admission is free for members + $14 for non-members with discounts available.  WABI 5
  • University of Maine researcher Michelle Staudinger received a National Geographic Society award to study whether cunner fish are eating more lobster eggs along Maine’s rocky inshore coastline; she will use environmental DNA to examine the trend + identify environmental factors that may drive the change.  Maine Public
  • Last week, Boys & Girls Clubs of Border Towns received a $348K USDA grant to launch the Wabanaki Tribal Farm to School Initiative, which will expand local access to Indigenous foods and teach native traditions for over 300 children at clubs in Houlton, Presque Isle, Perry + Indian Island.  Bangor Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Next week, recycling will return in the Bangor area when Municipal Waste Solutions in Hampden begins processing trash for local communities and aims to recycle at least 50% of all waste plus ease disposal challenges.  Bangor Daily News
  • A new ALA report released Wednesday shows Bangor is the only metro area on all three Cleanest City Lists + it ranked among the best in ozone and short-term particle pollution while falling to 10th for year-round particle pollution from a fifth-place ranking last year.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine’s Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Judy Camuso will step down at month’s end to become Maine Audubon’s new president & she spent 11 years with Audubon before joining the state.  Maine Public
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials and Mi’kmaq Nation leaders signed a co-stewardship agreement on Earth Day at the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge in Limestone to connect federal and tribal lands for research, cultural projects, and a new hiking trail (the first such agreement in Maine).  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The historic Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race was held along a course spanning 16.5 miles from Kenduskeag to downtown Bangor. Hundreds of experienced and new paddlers raced through flat and white water sections as supporters cheered the community event.  Maine Public
