- ➤ Blue mussel populations have declined more than 60% in Maine’s intertidal zones over the past 40 years and researchers are mapping mussel beds using acoustic surveys, volunteer observations, and marine drones—seeking to understand shifts to deeper water zones. Meanwhile, mussel farmers, including Bangs Island Mussels in Portland, are working to adopt hatchery methods to secure a steadier supply as warmer waters, predation, and other factors challenge wild stocks. - ➤ Governor Janet Mills signed bipartisan legislation into law Tuesday to help Maine prepare for future storms by creating a Home Resiliency Program that provides grants to homeowners and by adding resources to emergency management + establishing a state resilience office. WABI 5
- ➤ The Bangor Daily News filed a lawsuit in Penobscot Superior Court on April 22, accusing Orrington of violating Maine’s Freedom of Access Act by not releasing invoices, receipts and contracts for its trash plant with Eagle Point Energy Center—local officials cited short staffing and budget concerns as the cause for the delay while the plant, damaged by a fire, plans to restart trash service between September and November 2026. - ➤ The Maine DOT released its three-year work plan for over 2,700 midcoast projects worth $4.8 billion, which includes a new roundabout in Damariscotta to reduce crashes on Route 1 along with road and bridge repairs in Brunswick and Belfast.
