COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Needlepoint Sanctuary— a local organization— launched the Low Threshold Employment Program last year to hire people who are homeless or actively using substances and help them secure jobs and housing. Gabrielle Drew, one of the four participants, secured her apartment in February after being hired, and several others have also gained permanent housing and entered treatment.  Bangor Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, two teenagers sustained serious injuries in a head-on dirt bike collision on Eastbrook Road in Franklin while riding near a gravel pit—one was transported by LifeFlight and both were taken to a hospital in Boston.  FOX Bangor

  • Firestorm dispensary held a cannabis holiday sale on April 20th at its Bangor and Orono locations—manager Sam Cross said the promotion was a success despite low Easter traffic.  WABI 5
  • On April 20, American ReLeaf in Bangor saw its cannabis sales rise 25 to 30 percent above a normal day as the store offered special discounts—grab bags and lower prices on flower, concentrates and edibles—during a holiday weekend that brought together Easter, Passover and 4/20. Budtenders helped customers choose the right products while buyers made the most of the deals.  News Center Maine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Senator Susan Bernard supports LD 1069 — a bill that would require personal finance classes in Maine schools — because research shows learning about money helps students make better choices. The bill follows similar laws in Connecticut and New Hampshire and aims to give Maine students the skills they need for the future.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Orrington town now owns 25% of the shuttered trash incinerator on the Penobscot River after a change in its partnership about a year ago—this came as the facility required additional funds and time to repair damage from a 10-day fire last October. Renovation work is ongoing and the plant is not expected to accept trash again for at least a year and a half.  Bangor Daily News

  • Ellsworth is moving ahead with new housing, retail and commercial projects as city officials plan to add up to 2,000 housing units and boost local growth—despite challenges with funding and permits. Nearby towns like Bar Harbor, Lamoine and Blue Hill have slowed growth by stopping transient lodging, banning resorts and rejecting subdivision proposals—showing a more cautious approach to development.  Bangor Daily News
