Good morning, Bangor. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sunbury’s opened its specialty shop in Bangor this weekend and held a wine tasting with offerings of cheeses, baked goods, coffee, and cookware to create a welcoming community space—owner Annie Cutler aims to make it a hub for locals. The celebration continues today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and guests may enter a raffle for prizes.  WABI 5
  • Fire departments in Biddeford and Saco teamed with the American Red Cross of Northern New England to give free smoke alarms and fire safety lessons to Maine homeowners—since 2014, the program has installed over 10,000 alarms. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Over 200 students from middle and high schools gathered at the University of Maine on Saturday for the 40th Maine Science Olympiad – a contest featuring many STEM events. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Northeast Historic Film in Bucksport lost its National Endowment for the Humanities grant after a letter on April 2 terminated the funding due to government efficiency cuts — leaving a $104,000 gap that affects its seven staff and its plan to catalog decades of news footage — a move that disrupts its project to digitize historical media.  Bangor Daily News
