CRIME NEWS

  • Bangor Police arrested 27-year-old Manoach Bizumuremyi and 28-year-old Muhoza Bizumuremyi for OUI after witnesses reported that their car nearly hit another vehicle and later pulled into a Broadway parking lot at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, and both admitted swapping drivers and having blood alcohol levels of 0.23% and 0.17% respectively—both are now held at Penobscot County Jail.  WGAN

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Maine Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum will present 'Unplugged,' an all-acoustic live country music show on Sunday, April 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Irving Tanning Community Center in Hartland. Tickets will cost $15 at the door and doors open at 12 p.m. with food and drinks available.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fisheries scientist Carl Wilson was named the new commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources on Tuesday; he served as acting commissioner since March 14 and has worked at the department since 1999. The joint standing committee recommended him unanimously on April 3—he replaces long-serving commissioner Patrick Keliher.  News Center Maine
  • Thirteen Maine State Library workers received layoff letters on Wednesday and will have their jobs terminated on April 24, the union reported. The layoffs come as Maine joined 20 other states in a lawsuit to stop federal cuts that risk funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.  WABI 5
  • School food service leaders rallied in Augusta to support an amended LD 577 bill from Sen. Tipping that aimed to protect Maine’s free school meals program amid proposed federal cuts. The press conference was held yesterday at noon at the Hall of Flags—followed by a public hearing at 1 p.m.—as officials warned that many children could go hungry without the needed funding.  News Center Maine
  • The USDA research division received a memo banning 110 words including PFAs, clean water, climate change, tile drainage, and runoff to comply with executive orders—Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree called the rule 'absolutely absurd' and warned it may threaten funding for scientific projects such as the UMaine center studying PFAs. More Perfect Union first obtained the list, and it was later shared by the AP.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and All Souls Congregational Church launched a free support group called Beacons of Hope for Kids that met on April 9 at All Souls Church to help kids and teens aged 8 to 17 deal with grief using arts and play — yoga, meditation, and journaling were introduced as ways to manage loss. The group will meet weekly for eight weeks to support local families facing bereavement.  News Center Maine
