EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and staff from St. John Valley Technology Center earned awards at a March SkillsUSA event in Bangor — three students won gold medals, two earned bronze medals, and director Kevin Lavoie received the Cornerstone Award for his leadership. Two gold medal winners will attend the national conference in Atlanta in late June while one will miss the event due to scheduling conflicts.  The County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bangor police say distracted driving continues to cause crashes and warn drivers to keep their phones out of reach—over 5,000 Maine crashes were linked to distractions from 2017 to 2021. Sgt. Jason McAmbley advises drivers to use hands-free features and stay focused on the road this month.  WABI 5
  • Representative Billy Bob Faulkingham from Winter Harbor presented his bill on Monday to cap municipal general assistance reimbursement at 50% of total state funds—he said the measure aims to distribute funds more fairly after Portland received 80.7% between 2019 and 2024 while urging municipalities to seek additional support from local initiatives and nonprofits.  FOX Bangor

  • Timothy Dentry, president and CEO of Northern Light Health in Brewer, announced his pending retirement this calendar year—he led the organization for five years and helped it overcome challenges like COVID-19.
