- ➤ Today, WABI anchors Alyssa Thurlow and Joy Hollowell joined the Downeast Salmon Federation on the Pleasant River to catch ocean smelt for the annual Smelt Fry on April 25. The team used a 75-foot net and learned local techniques to stock the freezer before the commercial season ends. WABI 5

- ➤ On Tuesday morning, crews removed the movie screens at the former drive-in site as they cleared the lot for a planned 60,000 sqft Amazon warehouse approved by the Hermon Planning Board last year + town officials and Amazon have not released further details. WABI 5

- ➤ On Tuesday, Maine's average price for regular unleaded gas hit $4.03—marking the first time since 2022 it exceeded $4—with Oxford, Aroostook, and Washington counties reporting the highest rates while diesel prices surged to $5.88 amid global supply concerns. News Center Maine

- ➤ RSU 63’s board approved closing Eddington Elementary School by a 6-2 vote on Tuesday to cut costs, and voters in Holden, Eddington (and Clifton) will soon decide on a plan that calls for the school to close on July 1 pending state review. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Avery Browne, a 6-year-old artist from Dexter, is a quarterfinalist in America’s Most Artistic Kid contest presented by Bob Ross. Voters can cast ballots by tomorrow and his artwork will be on display at the Abbot Memorial Library from 1 to 3 p.m. on Apr. 18. WABI 5
- ➤ Girl Scouts in Maine will sell cookies through early May to build programs that teach entrepreneurship and customer service skills (a key part of their community focus). - ➤ Maine wildlife officials are tracking an increase in invasive eastern cottontail rabbits that threaten the native New England cottontails, whose numbers have doubled to about 400 since last year; they are asking local residents for help reporting sightings and working with landowners to create needed habitat (action aimed at recovery).
