COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A book sale is open today at Bangor Public Library in the atrium and on the first floor from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering discounted books, DVDs and CDs to the public. • Maine's South Sudanese community is alarmed as South Sudan's fragile peace deal falls apart after the arrest of a vice president spurred clashes and fresh violence. They fear for family in the war-torn region and say the crisis has deepened a humanitarian emergency — many now face food shortages and are forced to flee — and they urge global leaders to act.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced funding cuts that are impacting domestic violence support agencies — Partners for Peace said the cuts may force the loss of two or three full-time staff and reduce both shelter and helpline services. Survivors can still get help by dialing a 24-hour helpline at 1-800-863-9909 and community members are urged to contact state representatives to ask for restored funding.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Andy Mueller of MaineHealth said that Maine’s health care system is very fragile after COVID as many patients now arrive sicker from postponed care and there are fewer health care workers available. Rising hospital stays and threats to staff safety (such as workplace violence) show the system is under ongoing stress.  News Center Maine
