COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Town Fair Tire in Bangor is hosting a benefit car meet this Sunday at 1 p.m.—donations will support Scott Thibodeau and his family after he was injured helping a motorist.  WABI 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • MOFGA sent a letter to Hannaford urging the chain to buy more Maine-grown produce after weather and labor issues led to a carrot shortage. Hannaford invited MOFGA to discuss local sourcing (they already work with Maine farms during season).  WABI 5
  • Etsy announced a ban on most fur product sales on Thursday; the new rule, effective Aug. 11, will force Maine trappers and small businesses to shift sales + build new online platforms. Sellers plan to adapt with personal websites and local marketing.  The Piscataquis Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eighth graders from All Saints Catholic School held a dress rehearsal for Living Stations, Mary's Way of the Cross on Friday, April 3, at St. John's Catholic Church in Bangor. The play (an annual tradition) portrays Jesus and Mary and will be performed Sunday morning and afternoon.  FOX Bangor
  • The Nite Show returns for one night only to honor broadcaster George Hale at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Apr. 22 at the Gracie Theatre on Husson University campus (tickets are $20). He will also serve as Grand Marshal for the July 4th Parade.  WABI 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMaine Cooperative Extension in Orono released a fact sheet today to guide beginning farmers through business planning, land & soil assessment, equipment needs and market research. The guide is available free on the program webpage.  FOX Bangor

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MaineDOT will close the northbound Route 202 ramp to westbound I-395 on April 9 from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. for concrete deck placement so drivers should use Exit 3B on I-395 onto Main Street to reach westbound I-395.  FOX Bangor
  • The Maine legislature approved a bill on Thursday that lets Mainers install compact plug-in solar systems at home with an electrician’s help to cut rising electricity costs. Officials said new design standards will be released in the coming months (estimated to lower household energy use by 20%).  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maine reported 366 Lyme disease cases in 2026 (mostly from the midcoast) amid sustained tick activity following a mild winter. A Lyme vaccine candidate nears approval as experts urge residents to remain vigilant.  News Center Maine

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A local investor group is buying Bangor Mall to redevelop 90,000 sqft of the former Sears area into over 200 condos, doctors’ offices, and shops & green spaces. They are in a 60-day review and hope to close the sale by mid-June, setting the stage for a new mixed-use hub.  News Center Maine

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMaine unveiled interior design plans Friday for Morse Arena, a 106,000-square-foot facility featuring 2,660 seats, a new student section, and dedicated spaces for the pep band (construction began fall 2025, with the arena opening for the 2027–28 season).  WABI 5
  • UMaine athletics revealed designs for the 106,000 sqft Morse Arena + the new 2,660-seat basketball venue set for the 2027-28 season + the facility will also house a football operations center. Construction began last fall and features high-definition video boards plus premium seating in the Pine Club.  Bangor Daily News
