Good morning, Bangor. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today through April 6 the Anah Feztival of Baskets returns to Bangor, giving families a chance to win one of 55 baskets donated by local businesses and take photos with the Easter bunny. On April 4 visitors may enter by donating a non-perishable food or hygiene item—adults pay $1 while children 12 and under get in free, and prizes include concert tickets, fishing packages, and more.  WABI 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Brewer grocery store Tiller & Rye is celebrating its 10th year with a free-sample weekend that began Thursday and will continue until Sunday. FINANCE NEWS

  • FAME launched its Design Your Dream Money Contest on April 1 to celebrate Financial Literacy Month and help Maine students learn money skills. The contest invites students in grades 1-6 to design a $500 bill using a FAME template, with every submission receiving a water bottle sticker and one winner per grade getting a fun pack—each school that enters is in a giveaway for an Invest in ME Reads event.  The Piscataquis Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A judge rejected a legal challenge by environmental groups to federal permits for Central Maine Power's 145-mile power line from Quebec, upholding that federal agencies acted legally. Construction of the corridor is underway and it will reach commercial operation by the end of 2025.  Bangor Daily News
  • A new bill introduced by Sen. Jill Duson will increase funding for Maine sexual assault service centers during Sexual Assault Awareness Month—this measure will boost base pay for workers as advocacy groups report a 9% rise in service requests.  News Center Maine
  • Acting commissioner Leland Dudek faces mounting calls to resign after he canceled a plan that would have required Maine parents to register newborns for Social Security numbers at a federal office instead of a hospital — the order was quickly rescinded amid widespread criticism from officials who say it was a political move against Gov. Janet Mills.  WGAN
  • On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cut 20,000 workers and shut down five regional Offices of Child Care, including the Boston office—responsible for serving Mainers—with affected employees set to be permanently laid off on June 2. Former OCC director Ruth Friedman warned the cuts leave fewer local experts to manage child care safety and affordability for Maine families.  News Center Maine
