  • Pine Tree Hospice and Center Theatre are launching a free monthly speaker series called 'Betcha Didn’t Know' that will begin April 15 at Center Theatre when Donna Peterson explains probate; presentations on hospice care and membership healthcare are set for May 20 and June 17.  The Piscataquis Observer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maine fishermen and loggers are facing rising fuel prices (driven by global events) that force them to shorten trips and extend work days, which may soon raise consumer costs. Industry leaders warn that added fuel expenses could reduce truck drivers and strain local supply lines.  News Center Maine
  • Maine gas prices approached $4 per gallon Monday morning as regular gas rose 4 cents to $3.83 and diesel climbed to $5.72, nearly $1 higher than a month ago (tracking the national average).  WABI 5

  • Veazie Community School was named the nation's top elementary and middle school by Education Insider earlier this year, recognizing the school’s academic excellence and innovative programing at its prekindergarten to eighth-grade campus in Veazie + school staff continue their daily dedication to teaching and community support.  Bangor Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Frost heaves are creating bumps on rural roads as melting water fills gaps in frozen ground. More precipitation and temperature swings are expected soon so drivers should stay alert + plan their routes carefully.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mainers can now apply for the state's Paid Family and Medical Program, which offers up to 12 weeks off for family or medical needs (applications began Monday and approved leave must be taken on or after May 1).  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penobscot County recorded 41 HIV cases over three years, a sharp rise from its previous average of two per year. Bangor officials and partners launched a case management program last October and are increasing testing and PREP access for high-risk residents + calling for a robust crisis response.  News Center Maine

  • Orion Flemming of Vassalboro won the season-opening St. George River Race on Saturday in 43:42, marking Maine’s whitewater paddling season on the St. George River — with 104 finishers overall. Ben Randall of Sabattus finished second in the kayak division.  Bangor Daily News
