CULTURE NEWS

  • The Nite Show returns for one night in Brewer to honor radio legend George Hale. The tribute starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 22 at the Brewer Community School Performing Arts Center — tickets at $20 go on sale Saturday to support school music and theatre programs.  Bangor Daily News
  • At Maine Arts Day earlier this month, Thompson Free Library director Jon Knepp represented Dover-Foxcroft in the Hall of Flags at the State House in Augusta. Senator Stacey Guerin praised the library's display and highlighted its role in the community.  The Piscataquis Observer

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new AARP report shows that family caregiving in Maine is valued at $5.5 billion annually & over 300,000 residents provide unpaid care for older loved ones to reduce the need for costly institutional care.  FOX Bangor
  • The Maine Department of Energy Resources reported heating oil now averages $5.40 per gallon statewide, making a 275-gallon fill cost about $435 more than a month ago. The survey shows prices have risen 41% since the war with Iran began with March 23rd kerosene rates at $6.29.  FOX Bangor

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Advocates from Maine People’s Alliance and Maine Equal Justice are asking lawmakers to extend the state’s eviction prevention program that helped 1,300 people and cut evictions by 30 percent since its 2024 start. Reps. Ambureen Rana and Cheryl Golek (both supporters of the plan) back full funding for an extension.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new HIV case reported this week brings the outbreak total to 41 in Penobscot County, according to the Maine CDC. Community groups and state health officials (including CDC staff) are boosting testing and prevention efforts to reach those affected by drug use and homelessness.  Bangor Daily News
  • Midcoast Animal Emergency Clinic in Warren reported on Tuesday a rise in canine parvovirus cases across Midcoast and Augusta while city officials plan to share educational materials with dog owners even as local parks remain open.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Maine native J.P. Estrella—who overcame a season-ending injury last year—starts for Tennessee Volunteers in the Sweet 16 today at 10:10 p.m. His hard work and talent have earned him admiration at home as he prepares to compete against Iowa State.  Bangor Daily News
  • The Maine Basketball Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, Aug. 16 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor and will honor 18 inductees including 10 new members, six legends & two teams. Tickets go on sale on May 1.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • UMaine hockey player Josh Nadeau signed a professional tryout contract with Laval Rocket, the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, on Wednesday for the rest of the season. He said leaving UMaine was a tough decision but a necessary step to advance his career.  Bangor Daily News
