ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 29, early before sunrise, a partial solar eclipse will start in Maine with the sun appearing as a crescent and Caribou expecting up to 85% coverage. The eclipse will peak just after sunrise and last about 40 minutes—viewers should use eclipse glasses for safety.  News Center Maine
  • Black bears have left their dens as spring begins and are searching for food near homes. Residents should secure trash and bird feeders indoors—this helps keep the bears away from yards—so they do not make a meal of leftover foods.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • Baskahegan Co. said it may have to lay off logging contractors on its Down East timberland if millions in federal funds for climate-smart forestry do not come through by June. The funding freeze—linked to a review of promised grant money—has left local landowners and logging companies uncertain about future harvest practices.  Bangor Daily News
