COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In Bangor, a community drive is underway to collect gift cards (each limited to $20) and cash donations to support local TSA agents and Coast Guard civilian employees amid a partial government shutdown. Drop-off sites include Bangor International Airport, Southwest Harbor, and Edwards Brothers in Trenton on Saturday, March 28.  WABI 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Flight delays are affecting local travel at Portland Jetport and Bangor International Airport after a Sunday night accident at LaGuardia — with two cancellations and two delays reported in Portland and five delays in Bangor linked to flights to and from New York and Washington.  News Center Maine

CULTURE NEWS

  • WVOM plans to revamp its programming without longtime host George Hale (who learned of the change while on vacation in Florida). Hale is considering a farewell show offer when he returns.  WABI 5
  • The Bangor Stamp Club is partnering with the UMaine Judaic Studies Program to screen The Stamp Thief, a documentary on stolen stamps, at Room 100 of the Donald Corbett Business Building on April 12 at 2 p.m. The free event will include a session with the film’s creators.  FOX Bangor

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Statewide, gas prices rose by 21.6-cents per gallon last week, with the average at $3.79—almost 89 cents higher than last month and 80 cents above last year. Seasonal factors and supply concerns, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, continue to drive rates upward.  FOX Bangor

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at William S. Cohen School in Bangor will send yeast to near space on a NASA-sponsored high altitude balloon. The experiment will fly on May 16 and be shown at the NASA TechRise Student Showcase on May 15, with yeast returning in August for use in next year's curriculum.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMaine has launched the Black Bear Student-Athlete Experience Fund, enabling fans to support athletes through the UMaine Foundation with revenue from the $2.8 billion House v. NCAA settlement. Coaches say the fund helps boost competitiveness as they raise funds for sports programs.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine has begun directly paying about two dozen student-athletes under its new Black Bear Student-Athlete Experience Fund announced Monday (in Orono). Athletic Director Jude Killy said fundraising with private dollars has reached hundreds of thousands and will continue to support top talent.  Bangor Daily News
