Williams Family Farms in Clifton hosted the 42nd annual Maine Maple Sunday event yesterday with maple tastings + free samples, pancake breakfast, and family activities while donating part of the proceeds to Holbrook Recreation Center.

An oil spill from a heating fuel tank in Orrington caused a temporary road closure Sunday morning near Snows Corner at Dow Road and Johnson Mill Road, and DEP and Clean Harbors quickly contained the spill using a vacuum truck (officials said such spills are common during Maine winters).

Kate Garland, a horticulturist at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Office, advises local gardeners to test soil, adjust pH with lime or mulches, and add compost to boost nutrient levels before spring planting.

Her tips warn against over-tilling to avoid compacting soil (blocking air and water).

Local anglers are set to use decades-old tandem trolling fly techniques as lakes clear of ice soon, relying on methods perfected from the mid-20th century to boost spring fishing for trout and landlocked salmon (including traditional designs like the Gray Ghost).
