Maine biologists are taking steps to protect Moosehead Lake from northern pike — an invasive fish that could hurt native brook trout and landlocked salmon that the local tourist economy relies on.

They will net and tag 500 pike from Pushaw Lake to track the fish’s movement and help keep them from spreading.

Officials from the Maine Forest Service say the invasive emerald ash borer—first found in northern and southern Maine in 2018—is now detected in central Maine including Penobscot county.

The bug is set to kill nearly all infested ash trees in about two to three years, so officials recommend early detection, treatment, and avoiding the transport of firewood to slow its spread.

Bangor Water District told residents near Cedar Street to boil their water after a break may have allowed contaminants in and the repair finished Thursday afternoon.

The district will test water from three areas and lift the notice when samples show the water is safe—residents will then receive a door notice and Facebook update.
