COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The award-winning Finding Our Voices campaign (launched on March 25, 2020 when businesses closed due to COVID-19) will mark its five-year anniversary soon as its window poster project has expanded to over 100 towns statewide. The grassroots effort began with 14 survivors and 70 merchants and now offers support including financial aid and donated dental care to help domestic abuse victims rebuild their lives.  The Piscataquis Observer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology determined that a skull in its collection belongs to a Penobscot child aged 12—15 and will return the remains to Maine following the wishes of local tribes. The repatriation will occur on or after April 18.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine will roll out its new Pine Tree license plates on May 1 as a replacement for the nearly 25-year-old Chickadee design—Mainers renewing registration can choose the Pine Tree design or a plain plate, with it costing $25 to keep the same number and conversion finishing by April 2026.  WGAN
  • Lawmakers from different sides backed a bill introduced Tuesday by Rep. Vicki Doudera that would protect people who hold guns for others from legal action—aiming to help with issues like suicide prevention and home safety. The measure has bipartisan support from leaders including Rep. Amy Arata and Sen. Joe Martin and now awaits a public hearing.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • Legislative leaders announced a bipartisan storm preparedness bill headed to the legislature that will invest $15 million in grant funding to help Maine homeowners reduce flood risks—this measure also creates a State Resilience Office to enhance emergency response systems statewide after the bill passed unanimously in the Housing and Economic Development Committee on Tuesday.  WABI 5
  • The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife released its proposed 2025 moose permit numbers for each wildlife management district, unchanged from 2024. The state will accept permit applications online starting April 1 until 11:59 p.m. May 15, and a public hearing is scheduled for April 8 at 4 p.m.—the lottery drawing will be held on Saturday, June 21 in Farmington.  Bangor Daily News
