- ➤ On March 3, Maine credit union leaders attended a national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. where the Campaign for Ending Hunger won the Herb Wegner Memorial Award—honoring its longstanding work to help Mainers face hunger. The Piscataquis Observer
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Due to cuts in the AmeriCorps Summer Vista Program, Center Theatre will run only four children’s summer drama camps at Dover-Foxcroft, Monson and Greenville this summer with enrollment capped at 16 so more than 70 children might miss out. The theatre is fundraising at least $5,000 (plus extra funds needed to restart additional camps) to support the camp schedule set for dates in June, July and August. The Piscataquis Observer
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Snow melting across Maine has led officials to monitor rising spruce budworm numbers that may harm northern forests by killing trees and raising wildfire risk. A consortium of North Maine Woods, the state, and local landowners will begin spraying larvae on 250,000 acres late May/early June with a $15 million investment+ to protect $794 million in economic value.
