GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge denied Attorney General Aaron Frey’s request to resume Maine’s 72-hour waiting period for gun purchases, ruling that the law is likely unconstitutional after concerns raised following the Lewiston shootings. - ➤ State lawmakers set out a supplemental budget to fill a $118 million gap in MaineCare funding, and the bill passed the House with a two-thirds majority but failed in the Senate even after a compromise amendment was approved. Gov Mills warned that if a deal is not reached soon, the state may withhold payments to health care providers — and further negotiations will continue later this week. News Center Maine
- ➤ The USDA is ending two pandemic-era programs that supplied locally grown produce to food banks and schools in Maine, canceling plans for a 600,000-pound purchase by Good Shepherd Food Bank and nearly $2.8 million in school funding. Good Shepherd is now working to fill the gap for 180,000 people facing food insecurity—an impact the USDA says is part of its move to return to long-term, fiscally responsible measures.
