  • WABI held its first ever Good Neighbor Day of Giving telethon Monday — an event partnering with Penquis and Heart of Maine United Way to help Mainers with heating costs. Donations poured in for hours and raised over $30,000, and contributions remain welcome.  WABI 5

  • Spencer Janney, owner of Naiad Country Brewery in Orland, bought Mainescape garden center in Blue Hill from retiring founders on Monday and plans to expand his brewing operations while keeping the shop open as a community space.  Bangor Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Maine hit $2.91 a gallon Monday amid global oil market jitters from the war with Iran, and analysts expect prices to climb by five to ten cents daily. Drivers should prepare for higher costs as wholesalers react to the situation.  WABI 5
  • Palmyra farmer Steph Beem is diversifying her family farm into a small dairy and sheep venture as high beef prices slow herd growth and raise costs, a challenge shared by local producers even as demand for local food stays strong (farmers warn that rising prices make replacing stock riskier).  The Piscataquis Observer

  • The National Park Service says several Acadia trails (Jordan Cliffs, Penobscot East, Precipice, and Valley Cove) are closed for Peregrine Falcon nesting season, and the Precipice Trail parking lot is also closed today.  WABI 5

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Maine leaders gathered on Monday in Orono to honor the renovation of 24 affordable senior apartments as ownership shifted to the Housing Authority of Old Town — a move that reassured longtime residents about stable housing costs. Officials said a 20-apartment transfer in Washburn is expected next month.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Maine’s top high school basketball stars shone in state championship games last weekend. Lawrence’s Provost recorded 19 points and 14 rebounds, Fort Kent’s Jeffers tallied a double-double, Mattanawcook’s Cyr grabbed 23 rebounds, Camden Hills’ Ames scored 30 points, and Cheverus’ Lamson led a comeback win — setting the stage for state awards.  Bangor Daily News
  • The Mattanawcook Academy Lynx girls won their first state title Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center. Coach Pat House led his daughter Megan during a perfect (22-0) season that brought Lincoln its historic gold ball with strong local support.  Bangor Daily News
