  • Sonny Colburn, who co-founded the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race in 1967 with Lew 'Spook' Gilman, died Feb.20 at age 93 with his wife Faith at his side; the 59th race set for April 18 continues his legacy + honors his lasting impact on local paddling.  Bangor Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Veazie's robotics team is raising funds to travel to Houston for an international competition and began building their robot in October. They are now seeking sponsors — donations will help support their trip as the team competes in the Worlds event for the first time in over a decade.  WABI 5
  • Husson University will offer free tuition for Piscataquis County students with a scholarship honoring alumnus Harry Greenfield — who graduated in the 1960s — if they enroll full time in a degree program lasting four years starting fall 2026 and meet a 3.0 GPA and income guideline.  Bangor Daily News
  • Husson University in Bangor offers Piscataquis County students free tuition for the fall semester if they meet a 3.0 GPA and a family income below $80,000. Eligible students can apply when registering for classes.  WGAN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mills and the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry have launched Invasive Species Awareness Week, offering free online education on invasive species like the Brown Tail Moth & bamboo while experts urge residents to burn firewood where purchased to protect native species.  WABI 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Legislators are considering a bill to cap hospital prices at 200% of Medicare reimbursements to lower costs for families, but Northern Light Health warns the measure could force service cuts and closures plus drive patients out of state. The proposal is now before the health and human services committee.  Bangor Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • UMaine men’s hockey faces Northeastern in a two-game series with starts at 7 p.m. Friday in Portland and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Tsongas Center in Lowell — a key chance to climb the standings before playoffs.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine women’s basketball continued their season with a 60-59 win over Albany at Memorial Gym in Orono. Fifth-year senior forward Adrianna Smith (20 points) rebounded her own miss and banked in a late basket with 3.2 seconds left to move UMaine to a 16-12 record.  Bangor Daily News
