HEALTH NEWS

  • The American Red Cross announced it will end mobile blood drives in northern Maine in July due to rising costs and logistical challenges. Donations will continue at its fixed-site center at 900B Hammond St. in Bangor (staff may transfer to other roles).  Bangor Daily News

  • Easton boys captured the Class S regional basketball title on Saturday, Feb. 21 in Bangor with a 58-42 win, and they will face Valley for the state championship on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 12:45 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.  Bangor Daily News

  • Penobscot Valley girls won the regional Class D North title last Saturday at the Cross Insurance Center, beating Machias High School Bulldogs 53+37. The veteran team will face Mount Abram at 2:35 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Augusta Civic Center.  Bangor Daily News
  • Freshmen stars are energizing Maine high school basketball tournaments by powering teams deep into the playoffs in Bangor, Augusta and Portland.   • On Saturday, Feb. 21, the Lynx girls basketball team beat Foxcroft Academy 41-22 at Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, with Megan House and Addison Cyr leading the win.   • University of Maine Black Bears clinched an America East playoff spot by beating New Hampshire 61-58 at the Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle Saturday afternoon — Ace Flagg scored a career-high 15 points. They will face UAlbany in New York on Thursday, Feb. 26.  Bangor Daily News
  • UMaine women’s basketball won 67-61 over UNH on Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle in Orono, locking a top-4 seed in the America East tournament; the team will host a quarterfinal on March 5 with tickets on sale Monday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m.+Tickets.  Bangor Daily News
  • The Machias boys won a 61-57 Class D North regional final on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Senior players Liam O’Connor and Mickey Fitzsimmons led the effort with 12 and 20 points, respectively, helping the team overcome past struggles.  Bangor Daily News
  • Wisdom High School beat Katahdin 41–26 at Cross Insurance Center on Saturday morning — senior guard Ava Lerman led with 21 points and five steals, and the Pioneers will face Valley High next Saturday at 11:05 a.m. at Augusta Civic Center.  Bangor Daily News
  • Hundreds of collectors and sports fans gathered at Bangor Elks on a Saturday for the Bangor Sports Collectibles and Memorabilia Show—a bi-monthly event with over 80 vendors trading sports cards and memorabilia. The next show is set for April 18.  WABI 5
