- ➤ Bangor businesses will host a free Galentine’s Day party at Sawyer’s Shave Ice on Park St. tomorrow from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with charm-making at Dream Charm Bar — romance book deals at Books-A-Million, custom embroidery, treats from Torrey’s Muffins and Cookies, and free goodie bags for early arrivals. - ➤ Maine native Jessica Meir will command a space mission that will launch soon after officials confirmed the launch date, a milestone that brings local pride to the national space program. WABI 5
- ➤ The Greater Bangor Association of REALTORS donated over $40,000 on Tuesday to Penquis, Design Wall Housing, and the Elizabeth Levinson Center to support local housing services in Bangor. - ➤ Maine’s Wild Blueberry Commission announced Tuesday that it has opened applications for its Industry Emergency Viability Grant (a $1.3M aid package) to help growers recover from a 2025 drought that cost the industry $28.1M, and the commission is urging further federal support for specialty crops. - ➤ The Mitchell Institute accepted the resignation of its honorary chair & is considering a name change after former senator George Mitchell appeared more than 300 times in Epstein documents. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Municipal Waste Hub will reopen its Hampden recycling plant this March to serve 115 towns with an upgraded, automated system that separates mixed recyclables using lasers & air. The facility addresses years-long recycling challenges in Greater Bangor and aims to boost material recovery. News Center Maine
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Orono town councilors approved creating a committee to revitalize the downtown as outlined in the town’s comprehensive plan. The community development committee will set the structure, meet on Feb. 18, and may bring in an outside consultant to guide improvements over the next three to five years. Bangor Daily News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Maine recorded 390 drug overdose deaths in 2025 (100 fewer than the previous year and the lowest count since 2019). The state director of opioid response credited naloxone distribution and OPTIONS liaisons and urged support for harm reduction services. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ A local emergency vet in Holden is hosting a fundraiser to help families cover unexpected pet care costs through its Giving Tree Fund. Donations can be made in person, online, or by calling between 8:00 a.m. and noon, and the raffle drawing will occur on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14). WABI 5

- ➤ Scores and schedules for the Maine high school basketball tournament were released Tuesday — results from Bangor include games today and upcoming contests in Augusta and Portland through Feb. 28 as teams in Classes S, B and D compete regionally. Bangor Daily News
- ➤ Tuesday, Feb. 10, the boys and girls teams from Jonesport-Beals and Shead played quarterfinals in Bangor as part of the Class S tournament. The teams received strong support and advanced in the competition — a welcome boost during a long winter. Bangor Daily News
