COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crews from Versant Power will begin replacing the electric line along Easton Place and Fifth Street on Friday at 8:30 a.m. to improve reliability on Bangor’s West Side; the work is expected to last about two hours and may interrupt service for nearby residents.  Bangor Daily News
  • Fifteen-year-old Avery MacNair, receiving treatment for leukemia, got a Patriot-themed send-off Tuesday at the airport by family and friends — he will attend Super Bowl LX after a week-long trip in California with his brother.  WABI 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Penobscot County judge ruled that Briar Jipson must repay $55,000 plus interest to former owner Brian Pelletier after her restaurant Lavano’s at 118 Harlow St. closed two months after reopening on July 12, 2024; Jipson missed a Jan. 14 court date and said she plans to appeal.  Bangor Daily News
  • Some Bangor Mall stores are closed today after City officials cut power for safety because roof repairs have stalled following a heavy snow that left a foot of snow on the roof; owners say a contractor is set to fix the roof sooner to prevent further closures.  WABI 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • Families will step back in time at the Maine Forest & Logging Museum’s Winter in the Woods event on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Government Road in Bradley — live demonstrations include a 1914 steam-powered Lombard log hauler and axe throwing by local experts to showcase logging history.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Following Tuesday’s ruling by Penobscot County Superior Court, Namdar Realty Group must settle a $1.15M penalty & submit repair plans to address code violations at Bangor Mall within 45 days. The city has cut power to part of the building to protect health & safety for employees and visitors.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maine had a record number of Lyme cases in 2025 and UMass Chan + Tonix Pharmaceuticals are testing an antibody shot to stop infection. Phase 2 and 3 trials will start in 2027 and if approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the shot should be ready in 2029.  News Center Maine
  • Mother and grandparents allege that Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor failed to test and treat for syphilis during pregnancy, leading to twins suffering developmental delays, bone fractures, and anemia. They have sued the hospital following delays in processing routine tests that contributed to the medical issues.  FOX Bangor
  • Northern Light Health presented the 2025 True North Philanthropy Award to Jane Hibbard-Merrill and Charlie Merrill at a recent board meeting, recognizing their ongoing support for cancer care and community fundraising in rural Maine.   • Frank Del Duca (a UMaine alumnus from Bethel) is named Team USA flag bearer for the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday. He finished 13th in the two-man bobsled event at the 2022 games.  WABI 5
  • On Tuesday, Hampden Academy’s Broncos secured a 50-33 win over Brewer in a game that felt like a playoff battle on senior night. Seniors Miles Shain and Mason Studley led the effort as retiring coach Russ Bartlett praised their toughness despite a height disadvantage.  Bangor Daily News
