  • Dysart’s Snowmobile Ride-in weekend for Pine Tree Camp began Thursday with a telethon + spaghetti supper at Dysart’s in Hermon. Community supporters can join the live silent auction today at Morgan Hill Event Center before Saturday’s Celebrity Egg Ride takes off.  WABI 5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After a Bombardier Challenger 600 crashed Sunday night in Bangor, killing six, the NTSB is investigating the role of harsh weather + de-icing issues while an aviation expert said that pilots alone make the final call.  Bangor Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eddington Elementary School was evacuated Thursday at 8:30 a.m. after staff smelled a strange odor; 95 students were moved to Holbrook Middle School while a two-hour search found no hazardous gas— officials will recheck the building before classes resume.  Bangor Daily News
  • A local mother reported that her young daughters face racial bullying; her eight-year-old is called a 'burnt chicken nugget' (among ten reported incidents in two years). The Bangor school department enforces an anti-discrimination policy by offering counseling and support and urging more dialogue.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Modivcare emerged from bankruptcy on Dec. 29 with a strong financial position while assuring state lawmakers that ride services for MaineCare clients remained uninterrupted. Lawmakers voiced concerns about missed or late rides, and the company will provide guidance on filing complaints.  Bangor Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penobscot County reported another HIV case this week, raising the outbreak total to 36 as most patients reported injection drug use or homelessness. Health officials say community groups are expanding testing and prevention efforts to curb the spread.  Bangor Daily News
  • FDA officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak caused by moringa leaf powder in supplements from Live It Up and Why Not Natural that has sickened 65 people in 28 states, including 1 to 2 in Maine (reported locally). Users with products expiring from Aug. 2026 to Jan. 2028 should discard them.  News Center Maine
  • Wabanaki Public Health and Wellness trained 30 doulas in late September to support families after birthing centers closed across Maine. The mostly Indigenous cohort, funded by a $385,000 state grant — which supports ongoing talks on MaineCare reimbursement — aims to bridge gaps in maternity care.  News Center Maine
