COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pet Partners of Eastern Maine, a 1.5-year-old organization, trains therapy dogs for schools and hospitals — each team is named after its pup — and now counts over 25 teams. One dog, Pigeon, visited Cascade Park on Jan. 22 and will join the team by March.  FOX Bangor
  • Brick Church Warming Shelter in Bangor is asking for donations of warm beverages + clothing and soup to support the unhoused as it braces for an incoming arctic blast; extra supplies will be shared with other area shelters.  FOX Bangor
  • Winston is a 5-month-old guinea pig at Bangor Humane Society looking for a new home. The shelter invites local families to learn more about adopting him.  WABI 5
  • AARP Maine invites local nonprofits and governments to apply for the 2026 Community Challenge grant program through March 4 — a program that will fund projects to improve public spaces, transportation, housing, digital connections and disaster resilience with awards ranging from a few hundred dollars to $25,000.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • Coastal Auto Parts donated $16k to the Maine Veterans Project's heating assistance program at a check presentation held Thursday, Jan. 22. The fundraiser began last November and has raised over $35k in three years, with contributions from Caribou + Belfast, Ellsworth and Bangor stores to help local veterans stay warm.  FOX Bangor

CULTURE NEWS

  • Down East magazine will profile local ski areas in its February issue, showing how Titcomb Mountain, Camden Snow Bowl, and Lost Valley keep Maine's winter charm alive nearly 90 years after the first ski lift at Jockey Cap Hill was installed.  News Center Maine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine Public has maintained staff and live programming despite a $2.5 million federal funding cut, thanks to donations and cost-saving steps. The network nears its $31 million goal for a new downtown Portland headquarters while its TV unit stays in Bangor and plans for its Lewiston space are under review.  News Center Maine

HEALTH NEWS

  • With frigid weather ahead, warming centers in Bangor will offer shelter at Brick Church on Union St from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m., Together Place on Second St from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Mansion Church on Center St from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.; AAA advises drivers to prepare emergency car kits.  WABI 5
  • January is National Radon Action Month and experts urge Bangor residents to test their homes for radon (an odorless gas from decaying uranium linked to lung cancer) since one in three Maine homes may have high radon levels, with testing recommended every two years.  WABI 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Maine native Nathan Pare earned a spot on the U.S. snowboard team for the 2026 Winter Olympics and will ride snowboard cross after excelling on the World Cup circuit. He trains with Hydro Flask and is set to compete in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.  News Center Maine
  • Maine skier Sam Morse of Carrabassett Valley has been named to Team USA for the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina from Feb. 6-22 and it will be his first Olympic appearance after 11 years on the U.S. ski team.  Bangor Daily News
