  • At Milford Town Hall on Jan. 17, the Mainely Spinners set a best time of 11 hours, 20 minutes & 48 seconds in the 30th International Back to Back Wool Challenge. The team continues to raise funds for cancer with donations for Sarah's House of Maine.  The Piscataquis Observer
  • Local youth leader Dorian Pillsbury (D-Max) and Brewer Middle School basketball players hosted a teddy bear drive Monday night at Brewer High as part of Youth Night to collect bears for the Boys and Girls Club after the Birthday Bear tradition paused; a donation box opens next week at Smoke and Steele for additional contributions.  WABI 5

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Not So Empty Nest gift shop opened Monday at 49 Main St. after moving from its Broadway location to join a growing downtown business community. Co-owners Monica (with her mom Denice) said the store features unique gifts from Maine artisans and may extend its hours soon.  Bangor Daily News
  • The northern SCORE chapter provides free one-on-one guidance to local entrepreneurs (from Knox County to the Canadian border). Bangor-based consultant David Green said the group earned the SBA 2026 National Chapter of the Year Award after boosting session attendance by 30.2%.  Bangor Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMaine is set to receive $45M for a new health & life sciences complex on the Orono campus as announced by Sen. Susan Collins on Tuesday. The federal award, the largest in state history, will support plans to eventually build Maine’s first public medical school.  Bangor Daily News

  • Maine's new law (LD 1709) directs state health officials to educate providers and the public on menopause treatment, aiming to fill a care gap for women in midlife and improve patient support.  News Center Maine

  • Camden Hills guard Thea Laukka—an energy playmaker—helped lead the Windjammers to an 11-2 record in Class A North with 11 points, five rebounds and four steals in Monday’s win over Hampden Academy.
