CULTURE NEWS

  • SnowCon, Maine's longest-running tabletop gaming convention returns this weekend at the Black Bear Inn and Conference Center in Orono. Attendees can register online for a day filled with various games (including new titles from past attendees) to connect and play.  WABI 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local first responders practiced emergency communication on Wednesday at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, joining officials from Penobscot, Hancock, and Waldo counties to simulate a flood evacuation in a fictional Emerald City (a drill to improve media outreach and crisis management skills).  WABI 5

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Home sales in Maine increased nearly 5% in 2025, with over 15,000 houses sold and the median price rising to $405,000 (a jump of almost 4%). Lincoln County saw the largest boost with sales up nearly 19%.  WABI 5
  • Maine home sales rose nearly 12% in December, with buyers closing 1,324 homes while the median price dropped 3.7% to $385,000—showing a rebound after a 43-day government shutdown slowed November sales. Sales increased 4.8% year-over-year.  Bangor Daily News

  • UMaine women’s basketball will host defending conference champion Vermont tonight at Memorial Gym in Orono at 6 p.m. as part of the annual Military Appreciation event — offering complimentary tickets to military, veterans and immediate family members.  Bangor Daily News
  • High school football player Griffin Faulkner overcame severe health challenges to become one of three finalists for the defensive lineman award at Old Town High School. The winners will be announced on Jan. 23 and include a prize of 5000 dollars.  Bangor Daily News
