  • Sprinkles is a 5-year-old mixed breed dog available for adoption at the Bangor Humane Society, where staff say she loves attention and gets along with other dogs but will need introductions to any cats.  WABI 5
  • Puzzle lovers are gathering at the Bangor Public Library to piece together a 42,000-piece puzzle titled 'Around the World' on the third floor — the event runs until Jan. 17 as the library makes room for other programs.  FOX Bangor
  • Bangor Public Library is hosting a community event to assemble a donated 42,000-piece puzzle (valued over $500 online) until Jan. 17 in its third floor lecture hall. About 30 local puzzlers joined since Jan. 5 as staff ask for further help.  Bangor Daily News

  • The family is searching for 68-year-old David Sargent, who went missing Tuesday when he left his home on Sunset Strip between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., and they urge anyone with information to call police.  WABI 5

  • A study finds that limited funding and few residency slots are stalling UMaine's plans for a public medical school, and university officials say they are expanding residency opportunities and forging partnerships to revisit the initiative in a few years.  News Center Maine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Homeowners can repurpose wood stove ash to boost garden nutrients, clean surfaces, and improve traction on icy walkways — provided the ash is from untreated wood. Experts recommend using hardwood ash selectively to avoid altering soil pH for acid-loving plants.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Joe Baldacci will announce on Monday, Jan. 12 in Bangor whether he will run for Maine’s open CD2 seat after spending the holidays with family; his decision comes as Rep. Jared Golden’s retirement leaves the race competitive.  News Center Maine
  • BangorHousing is transitioning nearly 600 public housing units to a voucher-based model overseen by HUD, starting with the sale of 75 units at Birch Circle and Griffin Park between now and March as part of an effort to upgrade living spaces without changing residents’ rental and income calculations.  FOX Bangor

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Hermon Fire Department began using a new, $300,000 ambulance after years of planning and collaboration with Northern Light Medical Transport. The ambulance, soon to be staffed 24/7, will help improve EMS response times in the greater Bangor area (one staffing spot remains).  WABI 5

  • The Bangor Public Housing Authority will end public housing applications on Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. after over 3,000 people joined the waitlist — officials said limited turnover deepens the affordable housing shortage while a 50-unit senior complex is planned for summer.  News Center Maine
