  • Downtown Countdown took place Wednesday, Dec. 31 in downtown Bangor, bringing live music, dancing, and family-friendly activities including a fairy tale ball at the library and a ball drop from Pickering Square parking garage, while multiple venues hosted contests + giveaways in a lively New Year celebration.  FOX Bangor
  • Maine native Jessica Meir from Caribou will command NASA’s Space-X crew on its long-duration mission, launching next year to the International Space Station — she made history in 2019 during the first all‑female spacewalk.  WABI 5

ECONOMY NEWS

  • MOFGA will cut six staff positions as it loses $1 million in USDA funding that has affected programs for farmers and community education. The nonprofit says its core programs, including farmer technical help and the Common Ground Country Fair, remain in place as it works to secure more private donations.  Bangor Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine native Jessica Meir from Caribou is selected to command NASA's SpaceX Crew-12 mission to the International Space Station, scheduled to launch no earlier than Feb. 12.   • The UMaine women’s hockey team upset No. 15 Brown University with a 3 to 2 win on Tuesday at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.  Bangor Daily News
  • The UMaine Black Bears defeated UMFK 104-66 on Tuesday afternoon after outscoring them in the second half, with Logan Carey achieving a career-high 26 points plus all 12 players scoring and 25 turnovers forced. The team will host Bryant on Saturday, Jan. 3 in their first America East contest.  Bangor Daily News
